MS Success Honoree Carlista Moorehead: Building the Mississippi She Wants Others to See

by Cyrus Webb

Carlista Moorehead is the perfect example of someone who lets their work speak for them.

She might be a person of few words, but the impact she is making can't be denied. It's been great watching her not just enjoy the work she does but feel the love of those who benefit from what she has to offer as an entrepreneur and example in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Carlista, congratulations on being one of our Mississippi Success honorees for 2026. What has it been like for you to have the work you do being recognized?

It has honestly been humbling. A lot of the work I do comes from passion, survival, and wanting better for my community and my children, not necessarily for recognition. So to have people actually see the work and believe it matters means a lot to me. There have been many moments where I questioned if I was doing enough or if people understood the vision, so this recognition feels like confirmation to keep going.

What do you want people to know about the Mississippi that you know?

I want people to know that Mississippi is full of creativity, resilience, talent, history, and people who genuinely care about each other. Sometimes people only focus on the struggles here, but there is so much culture, innovation, and untapped potential. I know a Mississippi filled with storytellers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, artists, athletes, and families trying to build something meaningful despite obstacles.

I can't agree with you more. Who has inspired you when it comes to wanting to make a difference?

My children inspire me the most. Becoming a mother changed how I look at life and the future. I want them to see what persistence, faith, creativity, and hard work look like in real time. They push me to keep building, even during difficult seasons. I also draw inspiration from people in my community who continue showing up for others even when they have their own struggles.

How has the state shaped you as a creative and the work that you do?

Mississippi has shaped me through its history, culture, and storytelling. Growing up between different environments and experiences gave me a deeper understanding of people and community. The history here makes me think a lot about preservation, legacy, and creating opportunities that last for future generations.

Whether its through my soap business, community work, youth programs, or creative ideas, I always want my work to reflect healing, growth, and purpose.

Carlista, with all that is going on what helps you to remain optimistic about the future?

History actually helps me remain optimistic. When you look at everything people before us survived, created, and overcame with far less resources, it reminds you that change is possible. I believe every generation has an opportunity to build something better. Seeing young people dream bigger, become more creative, and embrace entrepreneurship and technology also gives me hope for the future.

As someone who has shown what is possible when it comes to believing in yourself, what advice do you have for others when it comes to pursuing your goals and dreams?

Stay persistent. A lot of people give up too early because they think success happens overnight. There will be delays, setbacks, and moments where you doubt yourself, but consistency matters. Keep learning, keep creating, and keep moving even when things are uncomfortable. Sometimes your biggest opportunities come after your hardest seasons.

Thank you, Carlista, for being an example of what is possible. We appreciate you. How can our readers stay connected with you?
