Business Spotlight: Aarika Smith, Realtor

by Cyrus Webb

Mississippi Success loves to features businesses and entrepreneurs who are not just following their passion but reminding us how we can do the same.

In this issue I had a chance to chat with Realtor Aarika Smith.

Aarika, it's been great watching your journey of working with clients and helping them see their dream of home ownership become a reality. What has it been like for you to see the work you put in pay off for those you are working with?

In real estate, you're not just closing deals. You're helping people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. Watching my clients find the right home, feel confident throughout the process, and step into a new chapter makes all the effort worth it. From first-time buyers to growing families, knowing my guidance helped make their journey smoother and less stressful is the most rewarding part of what I do.

When I was prepping for our conversation, I noticed that it was your parents had investment properties and rentals. What has it been like for you to find your own path to helping others when it comes to their own investments?

Growing up, I watched my parents use real estate as a second source of income and saw how powerful that was for our family. It wasn't just about extra money. It created stability, options, and the foundation for generational wealth. Making that love my own has meant helping others see what's possible beyond a transaction, whether that's long-term security or building a future for their families. Being part of that journey is what makes this work so meaningful to me. I get to be there for them and that is so special.

Education seems to be a big part of your work. Is that one of the fun parts for you, learning not just about what's on the market but finding ways to showcase it to prospective clients?

Absolutely. Education is one of my favorite parts of what I do. I love breaking market info down in a way that makes sense for my clients. I want them to know there's no such thing as a crazy question, and if I don't know, I'll find out.

For many first-time buyers, the process can feel overwhelming, but when they understand things like earnest money, down payment, closing costs, or how to make an offer, it makes all the difference. Helping clients feel informed and confident turns what could be stressful into an exciting, smooth experience.

We hear the word realtor, but those of us not in the industry may not truly understand all that you do. How do you normally explain what you do to others?

I usually tell people that being a realtor is about so much more than buying and selling homes. I guide my clients through one of the biggest milestones of their lives, making sure they feel confident, informed, and supported every step of the way. That means educating them about the process, negotiating on their behalf, coordinating inspections, managing paperwork, and solving problems before they even arise.

I'm also a cheerleader and advocate, whether it's helping first-time buyers understand earnest money and making an offer, or helping sellers showcase their home in the best light. At the end of the day, my job is about turning what can feel stressful and overwhelming into a smooth, exciting, and memorable experience.

We hear so much about the challenges out there for prospective homeowners. For those with the goal of owning a home, what should they be considering and planning for to make the experience less stressful?

For anyone looking to buy a home, preparation is key. Start by getting clear on your budget and understanding what you can comfortably afford. Credit is also important, because it affects your loan options and interest rates, which can make a big difference in what your monthly payment looks like. Think about your long-term goals: how long you plan to stay in the home, what kind of neighborhood fits your lifestyle, and what features are truly important to you. It's also important to plan for upfront costs like earnest money, down payment, and closing costs, and to understand the offer and negotiation process. The more you educate yourself and plan ahead, the less overwhelming the experience will feel. And having a knowledgeable realtor like me, of course by your side can make all the difference in turning a potentially stressful process into an exciting milestone.

I know that family means a lot to you. You set an incredible example of the importance of working hard and giving your best. What has it been like to show your daughters what is possible as well as others who might look at you and what you have achieved?

It's truly special. My husband and I want our girls to know that women can be strong, successful, and independent while still leading with kindness and integrity, and that putting God first makes all the difference. I want them to see that hard work, dedication, and passion can create real opportunities, not just for yourself, but for your family and future. Showing them what's possible is incredibly rewarding, and it's meaningful to know that others who look at my journey might feel inspired too.

I hope they see that with focus, perseverance, and a little courage, they can achieve their goals, chase their dreams, and build the life they want. Being able to set that example is one of the most fulfilling parts of what I do, both as a mom and as a professional.

For those that might be interested in becoming a realtor themselves, what advice would you give them about understanding the industry and what can help them be successful?

For anyone thinking about becoming a realtor, it's important to understand the reality of the industry before jumping in. Real estate is a service business built on trust, relationships, and consistency not just selling homes.

There are a lot of agents out here, but there's also a reason many don't renew their licenses each year. Success takes discipline, resilience, and the ability to work through slow periods without guaranteed income. Those who do well treat real estate like a business, not a hobby. With the right mindset and support, it can be a very rewarding career.
