[Book Review] BRIGHTER BY THE DAY by Robin Roberts is yet another example of her vulnerability and endurance

by Cyrus Webb

Whether you watch Robin Roberts on television or just caught a bit of her story here and there, you have seen why she is at the top of her game right now. She's bold. She's brave. She's a master at her craft. That doesn't mean, however, that every day is the best, and with BRIGHTER BY THE DAY she shows how you can learn from her life experiences and make the most of your own life.

I learned more about Robin in this book than I knew before, and along the way I saw ways I could use these gems she shares in the way I approach my journey and deal with others.

Some of the big takeaways: Don't be afraid to say you need help. Don't be afraid to bet on yourself. Be willing to take chances. Don't judge what you can do today by yesterday. Lean into forgiveness for yourself.

These lessons alone make this book a must-read. Couple them with the examples she shares and the way she has used them to become better and you can't go wrong. As Robin Roberts embraces her vulnerability and endurance we are encouraged to do the same.

DREAM BY DESIGN ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT: Carlotta Taylor

by Melissa Banks

Carlotta, you have many different businesses and you’re successful. I also noticed you are passionate about helping and inspiring women to be the best version of themselves. Why is this important to you?

Inspiring women is a passion of mine. All my life I heard women do not support each other. I am a leader in my field. One of the most important things I have learned over the years is to never present a problem without presenting a solution. The reason I inspire women is because I desire to be a part of the solution and to change the narrative.

You shared with our audience on the radio show DREAM BY DESIGN how your start was tough, and you went through a lot. That said, look at you now. What made the difference for you?

I believe it has been the roughness and toughness of my biological father, the softness of my mother, all my life’s lessons, and the favor of God.

What is your Secret Sauce to being able to keep going? How do you stay motivated enough to go hard every day?

I have experienced a lot of pain. When new painful situations arise that would normally break the average person, I normally tell myself, “If I can make it through the storms that have already passed, I can make it through this!”

Why is it important to you to bring as many people as possible along with you?

I want to make a difference. It is not about me. It’s about impacting lives, one person at a time.

I love that! Carlotta, what is next for you?

Well I cannot tell it all just yet. Be sure to stay tuned, because something wonderful is brewing. One thing for certain, continuously working on personal growth and development is always present as I move forward.

Thank you for your time. How can our audience stay connected to you?

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business: Evergreen Construction and Development

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I was 19 years old when it became clear that I could own a business.

Who have been some of your role models in business?
My family and community are full of intelligent people. They all didn’t own a business, but most gave positive advice. I learned from everyone. If you were a negative type I steered clear of you, because I understood that negativity wasn’t going anywhere.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?
First thing I knew was that I needed faith. Mom brought us up in church, so I knew faith without works was dead. My family always had my back. Before I had tools, I could borrow anything I needed from a family member. I was so blessed that my Grandma Minnie Ann McCray bought my first skill saw simply because she saw me working without one. My family believed in me. It made my confidence higher.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?
It was very critical. Construction is tough. It’s hard to find people that can or want to do the work.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?
I understood that if I toughed it out, it would pay off in the long run. An older man told me that it would be easier for me to have my own because men like him had paved the way. He was exactly right. I had so many people I could use as an example. I took a little from everyone.

You never learn everything, but there are some basic principles you can follow that will keep you on track. Once I gained a particular knowledge, it wasn’t like work anymore. My mom described it as “you look like you’re having fun.” Even though I didn’t want her to tell people that, it was true. I started to notice the power in simply performing a task and how to use it to make life easier.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?
First I would say keep God first, because without Him nothing is possible. Also remain humble, Just because you’re an entrepreneur doesn’t mean you know everything. Always be teachable and willing to teach. The road is going to be rough, but stay focused and you will see that it was worth it.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?
Growth, unity, and prosperity.

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
When I changed my lifestyle to a healthy one and received my personal training certification.

Who have been some of your role models in business?
All women who show that being healthy is a lifestyle, not just a get skinny quick or a fad that happens only when there’s a special event.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?
The fact that I could use my certification to change the lives of women

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?
It was important, because I wanted to show women how to make small changes in their lives that would have major impacts on their health.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?
I didn’t have any fears. I knew I had to achieve this goal, because it was not just about me. It was about showing other women what they could do as well.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?
Do not give up on your dreams and goals.  Take one step at a time. Keep grinding, and do let anyone stop you. Most importantly, do not stand in your own way.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?
I am looking forward to taking my business to the next level.  I want to open a business called S.C.O.T.T. (Sisters Concentrating On Their Temples).  Hopefully I can secure funding through grants that will bring my dream into a reality.

MS Success Story: Jill Gordon of Jill G Consulting, LLC

Name:
Jill Gordon

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business:  Jill G Consulting, LLC and Mega Level producing REALTOR® with Keller Williams

Hometown City/ State: Brandon, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
Nine years ago I started exploring options, learning new skills and asking the right people the right questions.  I learned absolutely everything I could about each job role I had and the time it took to master each job got shorter and shorter.   It took me 6 more years of working for other people before deciding to work for myself. I knew I would work hard for myself and knew I had the right support system.

My last 25 years of working I had spent building a large professional network, and they believed in me.  Additionally, I had so much peace in knowing I had the drive and motivation to do it.  After all, in real estate and consulting you are working for clients! I knew I could do that!  In my career, I had been coached and trained professionally on how to deliver best in class client service, negotiation, critical thinking, and value-based selling techniques.

I am creative and craved flexibility and the ability to work remote.  Keep in mind I left corporate America right before Covid, so I was ready when Covid hit and was totally virtual immediately.  I thrived in that environment!   I suffered a large income loss with Covid. but I was not only able to grow from that but had a record year of my career the next year.  I looked for the things I could do.  I couldn’t wait to wake up and work. I had the passion, and I put the work in to build a foundation worth building on by setting up systems and models that are proven to be successful from people all over the world.

Here I am 3 years later and it was the most beneficial move thus far.  Being self employed is a lifestyle worth living to me.

Who have been some of your role models in business?  My Mom.  I saw her get up every day and grind at her job, and she loved what she did.  She and my step dad took us all over the world on vacations and experiences, but she earned her living and I respected that.  She always told me that when it gets too hard keep at it and get through it---keep plugging.

Another role model is my late Grandmama, Lorraine Hearron.  She was one of the only working women in Meridian, Mississippi in the 1960s. She sold real estate to send my Mama to college at Mississippi State University.  Back in the sixties, few women were at college to get an education and go to work.  Her and my late grandfather ran a real estate brokerage in the prime part of Meridian, Mississippi.  I was too young when my grandfather passed to remember what kind of man he was but my Grandmama was the apple of my eye.  I admired her style and gentle spirit so much. She was beautiful, classy and smart; and I loved being around her.  She would take me to the country club for lunch and if you know me you know that’s why I love country club lunches so much!  She was a straight hustler and built her own house and ran her business several years after losing my Grandfather.  She built her dream home, and it looked like a mansion to me.  It wasn’t, of course, but I remember her taking me to her office.  Back then you had to lick the envelopes and she had that sticky thing that did it for you.  I thought that was so fancy.  At both my grandmother’s homes when I would visit I would pretend work like some little girls play school.

I had many great role models in my career.  Many male mentors that taught me tools that I still use today and will forever be grateful for those relationships.  My first boss Andy and my first exceptional visionary leader Curt were two favorite mentors.  Both those men taught me things I still use to this day in business: Relationships matter, do the right things and the right results follow, and ask for the business.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?
What helped me was a boss telling me I made too much money.  They had evaluated jobs and had talked about it for 3 months before they did it, so I evaluated my own job, with the same company they used. I realized I was grossly underpaid for what I was contributing.  I had just finished a two month event planning stretch where I sold it out and made them a huge profit.  I delivered and was exhausted from it.

When they approached me and even made the comment my salary was too high, I resigned with a 30 day notice so I could offload my responsibilities safely and respectfully.  And that was it. There was no changing my mind after that! I wanted to work for myself. I am smart, and I knew that if I was able to accomplish the things I had done for them, in the timeframe I did it, then I could do it for myself and my clients.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?

I believe things happen for a reason. I also believe that each step of my career perfectly aligned me to do the things that I’ve worked on the last three years. God’s plan was well in place before mine.  My first year in business, I founded and started a nonprofit for the state of Mississippi on vaping prevention in children.  However after suffering a divorce this last year, I had to make the choice to donate the work I had done so that it could continue.  I needed to focus on real estate and marketing as my life changed as a single parent - on a commission only job. It is a very successful program for our state and I donated all of my work to the state department of health office of tobacco control.  And it needs to continue.

My real estate business and my consulting business had both grown at that point. I believe true entrepreneurs can thrive in a lot of different markets and industries. I taught myself a new things every day and stopped waiting around on a job to train me.

Fear stops so many from going for their ls and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?

A large professional network and a super strong support system of people that believed in me.  I could not have done it without that and God.  People had watched me work in the community long enough to know I was a good person, that I had peoples genuine good interest in mind, and I am hard-working when no one is looking.

I have been so inspired by your consistency. What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?

Here are some principals that have served me well:

  •  Surround yourself with people that know more than you - even if it means you have to keep looking.
  • Look for systems and models already developed to accomplish what you’re looking to do.
  • Consult people more experienced than you and people especially that will tell you no and provide honest feedback, offering a different perspective.
  • Realize your value and know what you’re bringing to the table.
  • Listen.
  • Know when to use leverage and what it means—this was a game changer for me.
  • Express and show gratitude.
  • Do the right thing by the client – 100% of the time.  If you do I promise you that you will get more business from it.
  • Never shrink yourself to fit in someone else’s box.
  • Keep emotions between the lines in business. Get therapy when you need to heal.
  • Keep your resume updated.
  • Be coachable.
  • Give yourself grace and schedule some time off.
  • Know when to hold 'em.  Know when to fold 'em.
  • Not all ideas are good ideas
  • Not everyone needs to be your friend - business first.

Dallas Anding

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business:
Audio/Visual Technician - Owner - DLuxx Custom Installations LLC

Hometown city/state:  Brandon, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
By the end of my senior year of high school I assumed that I would end up running a business one day, I just never imagined it would be my own

Who have been some of your role models in business?
My biggest role models in business are all family members. Among other things, my dad, Guy Anding, always preached the importance of having more than one source of income. My grandfather, Clarence Jones, was the hardest working man I ever known. I knew if I could give just half the effort that he gave everyday I'd be in good shape. Honorary mention to my uncles, Willie "Eggman" Jones and Arthur McCray, and also my father in law, Willie Gore. Even though they worked every day it never seemed like they had a "job". They were their own boss and that always appealed to me.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?
Just an overall confidence in my abilities, and noticing the level of responsibilities I was given by my employers.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?
Honing my craft was very important to my success. I think the difference shows in my work. My customers notice my attention to detail and effort to make sure that the finished product is as advertised.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?
The realization that the companies I was working for saw something in me to trust me enough to run their day to day operations.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?
I would say never put all of your eggs in one basket and to be passionate about your product or service. Pay attention to details and always be willing to go above and beyond to satisfy your customers

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?
We're looking to expand our services, land more contracts, and hire more professionals.

Currently Clinton MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

When I was a little girl there was a family-owned nursery across the street from our home.  Anytime I needed to make some money I would go and work watering the plants.  It was then that I realized that working when I want with whom I want and where I want was the life for me.  It stirs my creativity when I work under those conditions.

Who have been some of your role models in business?
I’ve been blessed with many mentors at different stages of my life, each serving a specific purpose to help me to grow.  First, I would say my husband Wendell for his business knowledge that was incorporated into framing Kimberly Strauss Designs.  My most influential woman in my business life is Missy Washam who has mentored and supported my business for many years.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?
My faith in God and learning from my mentors to speak positive affirmations daily which I have posted on my vision board.  These things have kept me centered, focused and motivated.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?
It was probably the single most important thing to develop my craft by studying and learning various styles and techniques.  I see it as a gift to take what I have learned and be able to tailor it in order to satisfy each of my client's specific taste.  I’ve learned to also spend time getting to know the client in their environment.  I am able to then use what they value as collectibles and incorporate it into a stunning design theme that fits their individual style.  This is what makes my Kimberly Strauss Designs a unique experience that satisfies the most discerning of clients.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?
My faith in God, having the right guidance mentorship and developing self confidence in my abilities all of which lead me to a peaceful place where my design inspiration blossoms.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?
Your dreams are a glimpse of what is possible.  Surround yourself with others who are successful and never be afraid to ask for guidance.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?
I am professionally looking forward to expanding my design business to be able to service more clients. I am also looking forward to building on the success I have had in 2022 with Awakend, changing lives and helping individuals along the way.

Personally with these expansion plans I am looking forward to being able to spend more time with family which is very important to me.

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I knew as a kid when I sold candy in Jr High School.

Who have been some of your role models in business?

Emmitt Louie, my manager at Fred's Dollar store, one of my first jobs. He told me I need to know one important principle of business: “If you take care of the customer, the customer will take care of you.”

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

My step father got sick and died in a 5-month period of time. His decline and eventual death was the most peaceful thing I had ever witnessed in my life. He was almost happy. It confused me until I realized his peace came from living a life in which he had no regret. I knew if I didn’t take the leap I would not only regret it but could potentially suffer a slow decline with plenty of time to consider it.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?
Besides have grit, it may be the second most important thing.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?

Imagining a life without accomplishing those dreams.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?
Trust your instincts and never compare you path to anyone else. You are unique and so is your path.

What are you looking forward to in 2023 and beyond, either personally or professionally?
We are launching a campaign to create 100 filmmakers in the next 7 years and launch our own television network.

MS Success Story: Michael Norris aka Mr. Fluid

Name:
Michael Norris , aka Mr. Fluid

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business:

Emcee, Producer, Owner of Root Principles, LLC

Hometown City/ State:

Braxton, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

It started with deciding, or realizing, that I was an artist. Whether artist meant playing guitar, writing songs or poetry. It didn't matter. I knew this was who I was and why I was different. The idea that I could make money from it would come much later.

Who have been some of your role models in business?

Someone I look to, not necessarily as a role model, but for his consistency, professionalism, and reach within the state is Stephen Brown, aka 5th Child. He's an amazing talent and does more than his share in the community.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

Early on it was about joining, or creating, a group. Many failed attempts, for better or worse, inevitably led to my becoming a solo artist. Much of it had do with creative control and my natural sense of urgency when it comes to art and music. I always feel like I have to go out there and make it happen. Opportunities come to those who do the work.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?

It is at the center. To be an Emcee and Songwriter, it is all about the craft. I want my music to outlive me, be loved and respected by people across genre as I respect art and music that I may not fully understand whereas I recognize the attention to detail, the beauty and humanity involved.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?

Losing friends and family. Nothing is more frightening than that. Understanding I may not see tomorrow. Also, the acknowledgement that everyone deals with fear, it is part of being human, though we process it differently. I overcome it by not allowing it to cripple me.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?

Do what you love and find a way to do it that helps people and serves the community. Money isn't everything. Principles and determination lead to success.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?

I'm looking at touring and releasing music at a higher level, growing my fan base, and collaborating with other like-minded artists.

MS Success Story: Pauline Rogers, Executive Director of RECH Foundation {MS Success Honoree}

Name:
Pauline Rogers

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business: Nonprofit business owner/Executive Director/Reaching and Educating for Community Hope Foundation using acronyms RECH {pronounced reach}.

 Hometown City/ State: Jackson, Mississippi

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I literally knew as a child I wanted to be an Entrepreneur. That life was in the DNA of those I saw around me.

Who have been some of your role models in business?

My Father, mother and grandmother as well as uncles and aunts who were role models and trend setters I was privy to watching and observing growing up in Vancleave, MS.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

I don’t believe anyone ever truly go out on their own. My mentors who helped me take my first step in the work I currently do were the late Frank Collins Horton, Joyce C. Horton and Wendy Dorothy Burrage Hatcher. Mrs. Horton while I was sitting in the County jail waiting for the completion of the new Rankin County prison literally put my feet in her hands and prayed over me, and the steps I would make.

Mrs. Hatcher, the first woman hired to be a senior Chaplain by the Mississippi Department of Corrections hired me to work for her, mentored me and help me reintegrate back into society. We named our first SAFE reentry home for women coming home in her honor. There is rarely if ever a day that passes when I step in for work that these people are stepping with me.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?

My lived experience of incarceration and the lived experience of my peers continues to educate me and direct me in our craftiness to success.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?

Fear for me has become a welcome expectancy. I have come to notice that oftentimes where fear is absent is sometime an indicator that my aim was too low. I trust GOD and totally rely on him to push through fear because sometimes this fear is a friend that feels like a foe. I rely on wisdom for direction when this fear clouds our decision.

You are part of Mississippi Success’ 25 Mississippians to Know for 2022. I have been so inspired by your consistency. What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?

It is a humble honor of Cyrus Webb, a great encourager, lifter and supporter of others to be selected among the other honorees of his selection of Mississippi Success’ 25 Mississippians to know for 2022; all of whom I have great admiration who also are inspiration to be given this accolade and distinction.

My advice to others who look at me and want to follow my path, I say, there is no need to follow the path of me or others. Learn from us the ways for the things that are of no need of reinvention, but don’t fear recreation or new inventions, new methodologies. I equate it to shoes and feet. We can all have the same shoe, same size whether male or female. However, what set us apart is our feet, the feet give, “contour” to the shoe, the weight in the shoe makes a difference, the swag in our walk makes the difference, our mental process make a difference. My point is we are contoured for our own individual path.

• What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?

In 2023 I look forward to personally improving myself spiritually, educationally, intellectually, emotionally, publicly, physically, and financially. Professionally I look to expand our work in other cities, opening at least one additional home for women leaving prison. Architecturally, I look forward to developing some aspects of our reentry campus, building out our infrastructure, and capacity partnering with major corporations, organizations, Philanthropists and, being able to fund other great social services work.

MS SUCCESS STORY: Deborah L. Hunter, MS Success Honoree

by Cyrus Webb

Do you believe that faith can move mountains? Deborah L. Hunter sure does!

A chef, author, artist, inspirational speaker and businesswoman, she has been able to showcase her God-given talents in the kitchen, on television, radio, in books and online.

A proud Mississippian, Deborah was born and raised in Jackson, MS. '

When I asked her when did she realize she wanted to be an entrepreneur, she told me this: "The reality is we are all born entrepreneurs. This journey called life is about the business of living."

Deborah realized this about herself early on. "My journey into entrepreneurship is truly interesting," she told me. "As a little girl growing up I always dreamed of being a movie star, performing incredible roles on the big screen as the leading lady. I was obsessed with all things glamorous."

"I was mesmerized watching beautiful, powerful women like Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll and Pam Greer perform. That obsession hasn't led me to Hollywood yet, but it did lead me to more than 30 years in the beauty industry where I got my first real taste of entrepreneurship as a salon owner. I not only had an opportunity to learn. I was also able to put what I was learning to work and perform the basics skills of business."

With the accomplishments she has had, Deborah says there is one thing that definitely stands out. "The most rewarding opportunity I have had in business is to impact the lives of many people in a very personal way. That is what I believe is at the heart of entrepreneurship."

Challenges have come, but Deborah has remained focused on the bigger picture. "Dreams brought to life require you to be willing to take on the risk of doing the work by learning and exposing yourself financially, mentally, physically and spiritually," she says.

Examples of what was possible have come in many forms. "One of my biggest role models has been the iconic Barbara Elaine Smith better known as B.Smith. She was a model, author, television host and businesswoman. B.Smith encompassed the word fierce. She was beautiful, elegant, well spoken and smart.

"I remember the first time seeing B.Smith on television in the 70s I thought I had died and gone to little chocolate Barbie doll heaven. My life will forever be impacted by her presence," Deborah explained.

I asked Deborah what advice would she like to pass on to others based on her life lessons and success. "Cyrus, the only advice I have for anyone is to deeply love themselves and when they think they have reached that point, dive deeply into love again.  It is the sweetest of all success and the greatest compliment to God."

With so many projects in the works, including her podcast COFFEE AND CONVERSATION that she began in 2022, Deborah says she's ready for whatever. "Life is an amazing smorgasbord with so many awesome things God has given to choose from," she says. "Whatever is coming next I know that it's going to be incredible."

MS SUCCESS STORY: Stanley Clark, Real Roots Trucking, LLC

 by Cyrus Webb

In the 16 years I have known Stanley Clark he has always been a go-getter.

Coming from a small town in Mississippi, he has had been dreams for himself and others that have led him across the state and beyond. Throughout it all he has always allowed his faith and love of family to guide him.

In 2022 he was celebrating over a decade as owner of Real Roots Trucking, LLC. When I asked him when he realized he wanted to be an entrepreneur, Stanley told me that he always wanted something of his own for himself and his family. That has allowed him to enjoy several successes in businesses, and given him the opportunity to help others, too.

His advice to anyone wanting to start a business is this: make sure you are doing what you love, keep the faith and don't give up on yourself.

Who have been some of your role models in business?
Dr. Kishma George, Kearn Cherry and Cyrus Webb.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

From the very beginning, knowing that my books and products would impact the lives of others, gave me courage to take the path that I'm currently on.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?

It was important to learn and knowing that this was a part of my destiny and focusing on the readers who would pick up the books and get the empowerment and inspiration they needed. I had to learn who I was as an author and  reach the audience of readers.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?

The thought that other people are connected to me sharing my dreams and them being stuck because I didn't get started.  It pushed me to think that it was bigger than me. I realized I was a vessel to get the book out for others to begin to thrive and know that it is possible to live their dream.

I have been so inspired by your consistency. What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path? Stay true to who you are and were created to be. Be authentic and be you. Embrace the journey and keep moving forward.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?

I am looking forward to writing more, producing a play and teaching more  personal development  courses.

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I had been told over the years I was leader, but it was 2020 when I decided to step out on faith and do it.

Who have been some of your role models in business? Many people while I was growing up, but I would say as an adult it has been my frat brothers.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

My faith was bigger and is bigger than the mission!

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success?

It's very critical! You must always keep your craft polished and up to date to stay relevant!

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear?
Once again my faith is just huge! God wouldn't give me a dream and/or assignment without providing assistance!

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path?

Keep going forward no matter what! You can't stop because lost momentum places stress in other things! It's not about speed. It's about forward, positive progress!

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?
I am always trying to become better. So I'm looking forward to more growth, more networking and more opportunities to share my God-given abilities.

Patrece D. Johnson, 2022 MS Success Honoree

Name: Patrece D Johnson

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business: The Magnetized Life Strategist, The Beauty Within Speaks

Hometown City/ State: Jackson, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

It started when I was a little girl in elementary school, sitting in my 6th Grade class drawing a beautiful long gown dreaming of becoming a designer who had the vision to visit Paris to see the admiration of the Eiffel Tower.

Who have been some of your role models in business? Many aspiring leaders, family

members…not to mention the stellar, belated and beloved Mayo Angelo.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step?

I knew that I wanted something more for me, my daughter, my family. I felt that I owed it to God to at least try. I felt like I had something to share with others that could be a blessing. Also, it was the power of encouraging words and stories of many that have gone before me in making similar decisions.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success? This is a crucial component,

because this is by whom you would be known. Your craft is you. Your craft is your brand.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the

fear?

It was choosing to operate in my faith. Acknowledging, trusting God and taking Him on as

my partner. It was going to require some discomforts, and I just knew that I wanted more than

what I had already experienced. I wanted fulfillment of purpose.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow

your path?

My advice would be that your alone time with God must be a significant piece of the

puzzle. It is where clarity of thought, understanding, instructions and wisdom comes to you

from God. This gives you the peace that will be required on your journey. Often this is spoken,

yet seldom respected.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?

The NEXT best version of me. The NEXT best version of self. The NEXT best version of whom God created. The NEXT best version of Patrece.

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business: Hair 2000

Hometown City/ State: Brandon, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? Early in life, i knew what i was interested in & eventually grew to love it!

Who have been some of your role models in business? My role models were strictly family. Watching my great-grandmother & my mother do hair all my life pretty much locked it in for me.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step? Again, family support was a huge factor. Seeing it done & realizing I could accomplish the same.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success? Very important! Also having patience and giving myself time. I am learning still to this day. Being in business is itself a learning process. The hair industry is constantly evolving, so I’m here for it all!

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear? Prayer!! Fear paralyzed me for a long time. Prayer and patience got me through.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally?

Bestselling author Felicia Brookins: Writing Her Way Into Success

by Cyrus Webb

It can easily be said that 2022 was the year that bestselling author Felicia Brookins shined brightly for the world to see. She was recognized not just for her writing ability; she also continued her mission to inspire and motivate others through her programs and introducing her new stage play.

Over the years I have seen her rise and thrive, getting much-deserved attention for her beloved character Sister Nadeen while also showcasing the talents of others.

In this wide-ranging interview we discuss the year that was 2022 and more.

Felicia, first of all congratulations on another great year. What is it like to look back on all you have done in 2022?

It is indeed humbling. I look back and see all that God has allowed me to accomplish and I am grateful for it.

Your gift of storytelling is definitely making room for you. When did you realize that gift?

I would say I realized this wonderful gift in 2011 when I began writing the script for my very first stageplay, ‘What About The Children?’

Sister Nadeen’s Ways is how many of us got to know. Where did the idea come from?

The main character came from my viewpoint as a child and my experiences as a child coming up among individuals that I now know had the ‘image’ of God but not his ‘likeness.’ Though it is a fictional piece, it has many truths woven within the pages.

You have also been able to do great things with your platform like the annual Prison to Pens event. Tell our readers about it.

Prison To Pens is truly an inspirational gift given to me from above. It is a virtual literary event that gives a voice to previously incarcerated individuals that have written books, spoken word poetry, poems and other literary pieces to help them freely express their experience and to help with their rehabilitative and restorative process as they acclimate to being outside of four walls and away from the experience of once being incarcerated. They share how writing has helped them and how it has evolved for them into community activism and community programs for improvement in their lives and the lives of others.

Because of what you do you have reached people around the world. How does that feel to see how people have responded to what you have achieved?

It gives me a feeling of well-being and accomplishment. I am happy to be a help to others and be a part of their journey to reach the goals and dreams they have set for themselves. It keeps me grounded by always reminding me that I once was that person.

This year we have also seen you prepare for your stage play. Tell us about it.

‘The Brownie: An Unforgettable Trip’ is a production that I believe will cause individuals to look in the mirror at themselves and their spiritual walk. It is a funny, thought-provoking, tense, edge of your chair story of a group of church members that think they have it all together when it comes to entering the Kingdom one day. They believe they are truly on their way with their works and deeds for the church. This includes the Pastor. In order to strengthen their bond, they all go on a church retreat one weekend expecting to come back ready to do even more work for the Kingdom. Little do they know this trip will be one they will indeed never forget, and the outcome will have eternal consequences.

I’ve personally seen what you’ve done to encourage aspiring authors, too. What advice do you normally give those starting out on their writing journey?

When it comes to aspiring authors, I normally start out by advising them to just get it all out on paper. Write all their thoughts down for the story they want to tell and then go back and begin to work on the order of your story. I also advise them to not focus so much on starting at page one, it is okay to write your ending first if you know what it is. Nothing is in stone when it comes to how you put your story down on paper. Next, I advise them to begin putting the word out about their upcoming book. This allows everyone to get excited about their upcoming book and it gives them encouragement to continue with the process.

I’m always curious about success for those I talk to. What does success mean for you today? Success for me is when someone meets me or reaches out to me and tells me that I inspire them. That means volumes to me. It says I am producing hope and encouragement and people so need that in their lives.

Thanks again for the time, Felicia. We are so proud of you. How can our readers stay connected with you?

It is always my pleasure to talk with you, Cyrus. Your amazing and supportive group of followers can connect with me on  Facebook at: @BookAuthorFeliciaB, Twitter: FeliciaBrookin4, or via email : AuthorFeliciaBrookins@gmail.com.

MS Success Story: Joseph C. Thomas, Jr.

Name:
Joseph C. Thomas, Jr.

Profession/ Title/ Name of Business: Station Manager for WYAD 94.1 FM in Yazoo City, MS

Hometown City/ State: Yazoo City, MS

When did you know that you wanted to be an entrepreneur? For me it goes back to 1997. I was working at a job and witnessed someone who was promised a job never get it. I said then I could never work for someone and not own the business. The seed was planted then.

Who have been some of your role models in business? My parents for sure. I have seen them run businesses since the 1980s, including a thrift store and laundry mat. I was blessed to be around people who had businesses and were focused on having something of their own.

Going out on your own is not easy. What helped you to take the first step? I couldn’t find a job I could devote myself to, so I decided to create one. I told myself if I was going to work hard, I was going to work hard for myself.

How important was learning or honing your craft to your success? It’s very important. I didn’t know anything about broadcasting. I didn’t have any idea how to operate a radio station. When you're in a small market you have to learn it all. You can’t keep calling others to fix things and do things. You have to learn to do things yourself.

Fear stops so many from going for their goals and dreams. What helped you to overcome the fear? I want to do it my way. The fear of failure is what motivates me. I wouldn’t want failure to define who I am.

What advice would you give to others who look at you and want to follow your path? Everything that glitters is not gold. Sometimes you have to go without a lot of things. You can't think short-term. You have to have long-term goals and work towards them everyday. Being in business comes with a lot of sacrifices. The sun might be shining today, but you have to prepare for the rainy days, too. You’re in charge good or bad. You have to do what is necessary if you really want success.

What are you looking forward to in 2023, either personally or professionally? I am looking forward to expanding the radio station. That includes creating more opportunities for new shows and talent. It is my goal to continue to put WYAD and Yazoo City, MS on the map.

[To You, From Me] Sharing Mississippi Success with the World

Mississippi has been in the news quite a bit in 2022. Unfortunately, not always for the right reasons.

As someone who was born in the Magnolia State and glad to call Mississippi home, I get asked all the time about the things that are being reported about the state. Though I know we have our share of issues, what I always say is that it's not the whole of who the people of Mississippi are or what the state represents.

When I began Mississippi Success in 2017 the goal was to share the Mississippi that I have come to know and love. Yes, we have our problems like any other state, but we are also full of individuals who make the state proud. That is what this issue of Mississippi Success is all about.

Throughout the year Mississippians and those representing the state have been showing by example what is possible and what others can become. In this issue you will see profiles of individuals who are rising and thriving, as well as encouraging us all to be better.

Some are known on the world stage. Others are heroes in their community. You'll read about how Joe Thomas, Jr., Station Manager of WYAD 94.1 FM in Yazoo City, MS, wasn't content just working for others and what motivated him to want something of his own. You'll see how Kimberly Strauss has identified her passion and is sharing it everywhere she goes.. LaDonna Marie, Maximus Wright and Patrece D. Johnson remind us of what can happen when you are doing what you love. Additionally, Felicia Brookins, bestselling author and overall great individual, is riding high while her gifts make room for her and others.

What I want this issue of Mississippi Success to do is remind you to embrace your own greatness and not allow others to dim your light. Sure we have dark times or might find ourselves in situations that aren't ideal, but that doesn't mean we can't continue to thrive.

May you find encouragement to continue blazing your own path to success and inspiring others to do the same.

Happy Reading!
